Des Moines' FIRST Birth Center Births

Not since January 1992, has a birth occurred in a Des Moines Birth Center. On Sunday Almost Home Birth Center at 2708 Grand Ave, opened its doors for a Birthday Bash. Charlene and Daniel Wade from West Des Moines gave birth to a 7lb baby girl. Norah Clare Wade didn’t have long to bask in being the first born Birth Center baby. Evelyn Garrison arrived 2 hours later, giving birth to her third child, also a girl named Azalea, weighing 7.8lbs. The nurse midwife for both families was Sheryl Puderbaugh ARNP/CNM, who recently lost her sponsoring physician and thus privileges at Iowa Methodist Hospital.

Ms. Wade stated, “I chose the Birth Center, because it’s the only place in Des Moines where a nurse midwife can catch my baby.” Ms. Wade is a registered nurse at Blank children’s hospital. Both families have returned home, where they will receive a home visit tomorrow from their nurse midwife, checking up on both Mom and baby.
